Adult B strengthens your grammar, literacy, and conversational skills as you progress toward JLPT N5 proficiency. Develop confidence using both casual and formal Japanese in real-world situations.
This course is recommended for those who have completed Adult A or WE130 at VJLS-JH. If you’re new to our school, we typically advise that you have studied Japanese for 100 ~ 150 hours before taking Adult B. Unsure about your Japanese language level? Our course coordinators would be happy to help - get in touch by email.
Structured, logical progression: Build on the basics of hiragana, katakana, and simple sentence structures and work towards the N5 proficiency level.
Practical curriculum: Our 40-week program has been reviewed and updated by Kiyoko Fujii, a VJLS instructor with over 25 years of international language teaching experience.
Immersive classes: Our qualified instructors move beyond the textbook to enhance the learning experience, with real-time support and memorable learning activities.
Become a part of the VJLS-JH community: Meet classmates with similar goals and create lifelong connections! Many students gather for study groups and stay in touch outside of VJLS-JH. Bonus for Saturday students – stick around for our Japanese school lunches!
Grow confident with your Japanese: This course teaches you the tools to start expressing yourself – whether you’re looking to use Japanese to travel off the beaten path, connect with colleagues, or build deeper family connections.
Adult B covers Lessons 7–12 of Genki 1 (3rd Edition) and is supported by instructor-led classroom learning. By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
Describe complex actions: Connect ideas using the "Te-form" to describe ongoing events and make polite requests.
Express thoughts and opinions: Use short-form grammar and fundamental particles to share your views, state intentions, and explain why something happened (in the past and present).
Decide when to use casual and formal speech: Use the "Plain Form" around friends and family, while maintaining the "Polite Form" for professional environments.
Make practical requests and arrangements: Discuss your physical health with a doctor, plan trips, and make appointments.
Expand your literacy: Learn how to read and write an additional 87 Kanji characters (bringing your total to 145).
