Our Story
Founded in 1906 at a newly-constructed wooden building at 439 Alexander Street, right in the heart of Powell Street (Paueru Gai), Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall (VJLS-JH) is a non-profit, community-based and driven organization, committed to education, culture and community.
VJLS-JH is the oldest Japanese language school in Canada and the only remaining pre-War building which has been returned to and continues to be operated by the Japanese Canadian community. In 2019, the school was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.
VJLS-JH has continued to evolve and reflect the changing needs and fabric of Canada’s multicultural society.
Traditionally, our students came mostly from the Japanese Canadian community. Now our student population stem from over 12 different countries of heritage. Our role as a bridge between Japanese and Canadian communities strengthens every day.
You can read more on the history of our school, as well as the Powell Street Japanese neighbourhood at our History page.
We continue to offer Japanese language education to students of all backgrounds, abilities, and ages who wish to become involved in our community.
We offer a unique learning experience that incorporates cultural events and activities into courses to help students reach their potential and deepen their understanding and appreciation of Japanese Canadian culture.
Our full Japanese Program curriculum can be found on our website.
