Washi Workshop
Ayumi Hamada comes from a family with a paper company called “Kashiki Paper,” which was established by her great-grandfather in 1950 and continues to this day. The company focuses on using domestic raw materials (mainly from Kochi Prefecture) and emphasizes the high preservation quality, one of the key aspects of washi.
After returning to Kochi and helping with the paper company, she discussed the situation with acquaintances who are artists and brainstormed various ideas. This laid the foundation for Washi+.
Washi+ artist residency was built to support the local community during the laborious processes involved in the making of paper while inviting artists into these processes for the enhancement of their practice. This involves cultivating the raw material on local farms, processing raw material and making paper in Ayumi’s multi-generational family paper mill Kashiki Seishi Paper Co.
From Raw Materials Cultivation to World-class Tosa Washi Creation | LIBRARY LOCAL TECHNIQUES JAPAN
Washi+ aims to cultivate a new washi culture born from the fusion of performing arts and Tosa washi, and to create opportunities for the local culture to deepen across time and space, inspired by these activities.
