Traditional Japanese Printmaking

with Paula Nishikawara

Gyotaku (魚拓) is the traditional Japanese method of making a print on paper from a real fish; a practice which dates back to the mid-1800s.

This form of nature printing was used by fishermen to record their catches, and has become an art form of its own.

Transforming real fish forms; learn the traditional Japanese art of creating art prints from real fish.

You will learn how to handle the special Washi (Japanese paper), paint and the fish to make several of your own prints.

  • No experience necessary!
  • All materials included – fish, squid, octopus, paper, paint, brushes.
  • Feel free to bring fabric pieces  – t-shirt, tea towel, tote bag for example.
  • You will go home with several finished Gyotaku.
