Since 1906, the Vancouver Japanese Language School & Japanese Hall (VJLS-JH) [Vancouver Nihon-go Gakko narabi ni Nikkei Jin Kaikan] has been a hub of Japanese language learning and culture in the heart of Vancouver’s Paueru Gai (Powell Street) neighbourhood.
The school and hall were built to be a community foundation for Japanese Canadians to create and maintain connections to Japanese language and community. It is a home to past, present, and future Japanese Canadians, and family to many. This home also welcomes people who value Japanese Culture and multiculturalism and who are interested in learning and making new friendships.
Founded in 1906, VJLS-JH is the oldest Japanese language school in Canada and the only remaining pre-Internment building to be operated by the Japanese Canadian community. In 2019 it was designated as a National Historic Site of Canada.
The purposes of the organization are defined by the Constitution.
