Vancouver Japanese Language School (VJLS) is launching a new course: “Learning Japanese Culture and History through Studio Ghibli." Let us learn more about Japan through the lens of the world-famous animation studio, by analyzing the “whys” in Ghibli movies!
This is a 10-week In-person Weekday Evening class program.
“My parents aren’t here.” This is a scene from "Spirited Away", but why was Chihiro able to notice it? In order to know this, it is necessary to know the historical background and Japanese culture hidden in Ghibli movies. In this course, students will be exploring the topics of Japanese Culture, History and Society through Studio Ghibli’s animated films. By analyzing Ghibli’s works, students will be able to better understand Japan’s unique cultural elements, social values, traditions and artistic representations. Classes consist of discussions, film airing, exercises and presentation. Not only will students appreciate the films themselves, but also learn about the cultural background that gave birth to such works.
This course will be taught in English, with some Japanese-language learning along the way. Previous experience studying Japanese is helpful but not required.
