Dear VJLS-JH Students, Parents, and Guardians,

We hope all of you are well and were able to safely gather with those you care about and enjoy the holidays together. These moments to be with others are important and it has been wonderful being able to do the same at VJLS-JH this past Fall as students returned to the classrooms and organized activities like Shichigosan, Saturday lunches, and the Japanglish Cafe.

Temporary Move to Online Classes
Unfortunately, we must inform you that VJLS will be temporarily moving back to online lessons in January due to the increased health risks posed by the new Omicron Variant of COVID 19. In just a few short weeks we have seen the number of cases in BC and Canada nearly double and we do not wish to place our staff or students at such an increased risk unnecessarily.

We will be providing more information to parents about how to setup their computers for online classes. Please look for an email before January 8, 2022 from your homeroom teacher with information on how to login to your class.
We are currently following the direction of other educational organizations like UBC, SFU, UNBC, and UVIC who are switching to online courses temporarily for January 2022. We are expecting more information from Dr. Bonnie Henry on January 18th regarding the current restrictions and if more restrictions will be coming. Once we have this additional information, we will follow up with you to share our plans for February and the months afterwards. It is our hope that we will be able to return to in-person learning as soon as it is safely possible to do so.

As of December 29, 2021 we have not been informed of what K-12 schools are preparing to do for January classes. In order to provide parents and students with as much time as possible to prepare for the temporary change to online classes, we chose to make this announcement now rather than to delay it. Please note that for Kindergarten classes we are exploring in-person options due to online learning not being as effective for children that age. We will be reaching out to these parents directly.

Payment Information
Please note that as a result of this temporary change to online classes, we will be cancelling in-person calligraphy classes and elective classes for this month. All 3-hour classes will also be shortened to 2-hour classes. All 2-hour lessons are charged a fee of $85/month and this amount will be charged to current students. Andrew Young, our Senior Accountant, will be updating your payment records to reflect these changes and there may be a delay of up to one-week to accommodate this. Andrew can be reached at

We recognize that many students have been enrolled for the in-person experience offered at VJLS-JH and that online classes provide a different learning experience. Although we encourage you to continue with your studies until we can return to in-person learning, if you wish to pause your participation please contact our Principal Kiyoko Fujii at

Children’s World
For parents with children enrolled in Children’s World programs, please note that these programs are considered safe to remain open and that we are going above and beyond current cleaning and safety protocols to ensure staff, parents, and children remain healthy and safe. As a result, our policies for withdrawals and leaves of absences will remain in place as outlined here:

Future Updates
We were fortunate not to have any serious cases of COVID 19 this Fall and we recognize that this was made possible by everyone following our protocols and restrictions. We thank you for your support and understanding and we hope that you will stay with us as we implement this latest temporary change to help keep you safe. We want to return to in-person classes as soon as it is safely possible to do so and we will issue regular updates on the COVID 19 situation and our plans to address it.
