At Vancouver Japanese Language School, it is our tradition that we kick off the new year with Japanese lion dance, or Shishimai. As usual, Rakuichi – Vancouver Mikoshi Group performed shishimai dance. The sound of flute (fue), taiko and bell (kane) set the mood for the new year and two lions danced to bring us a fortune. It was a great opportunity for us to learn about traditional Japanese culture and was an exciting first day of school. At the end of the dance, the lion “bites” the heads of our students, to bring luck and health.
